Choosing your wedding date: a Scottish guide for 2027 and 2028
Congratulations — you're engaged, everyone's asked "so when's the big day?" nine hundred times, and you've realised you have absolutely no idea. Picking the date is the first real decision of the wedding, and it quietly shapes every other one. Here's how I'd think it through — with the Scottish-specific bits nobody puts in the planning guides.
Season first, date second
Don't start with a date; start with a feeling. Long bright evenings and outdoor drinks? May, June or September. Candlelight, fires and drama? Winter has a stronger case than you think. And here's the west-of-Scotland truth your venue's brochure won't mention: the midge. If you're marrying outdoors near water or woodland in the west, late June to August is peak season for the wee terrors — May and September give you the scenery without the swatting. (Coastal breezes and city weddings are largely exempt.)
The day of the week is a lever
Saturday is the premium product — venues know it and price it. A Friday or Sunday often saves real money and books far easier; guests have adjusted to it. A midweek wedding unlocks venues and dates you'd otherwise wait years for. One advantage of a humanist wedding: I'm not bound by registry office hours — a Thursday twilight ceremony is as legal and as lovely as a Saturday afternoon one.
Dates that mean something
The anniversary of your first date. A late parent's birthday, marked gently. The day you met, ten years on. Meaningful dates give your ceremony a built-in story — and I'll happily write it in. Just check the date against the practical stuff below before you fall in love with it. And a warning from the front lines: check the football fixtures before you book anything in Glasgow. I have seen a best man watch a cup final on a phone under a table. Choose a date, not a kickoff.
The practical checklist for 2027–28
School holidays cut both ways — easier for families with kids, pricier for travel. Bank holiday weekends give guests a recovery day but fill venues fast. Hogmanay and Christmas dates are magic and expensive in equal measure. And whatever date you land on: the best venues and suppliers for summer 2027 are already taking bookings now, and summer 2028 will open sooner than feels reasonable. The order of operations is simple — date, venue, celebrant, everything else. I'd love to be third on that list.
