How much does a humanist wedding cost in Scotland?

By John Paul Fitzpatrick — Humanist Society Scotland celebrant

Wedding suppliers are famously cagey about prices, which I've never understood — you're planning the most expensive day of your life, you deserve numbers. So here they are, straight, from a working Humanist Society Scotland celebrant.

The headline number

My charges range from £550 (as of 2026). That covers your celebrant's fee and includes a two-year membership of Humanist Society Scotland — the organisation through which the ceremony is legally authorised. You secure your date with the Humanist Society Scotland fee of £98, and the balance follows once your celebrant is confirmed. Travel expenses and a rehearsal, if you'd like one, are agreed separately depending on where and when you're marrying. No hidden extras, no "premium Saturday" surcharge, no upsells at the door.

What that money actually buys

Not twenty minutes of talking — months of work. The meetings where I get to know the two of you properly. A ceremony researched and written from scratch: your story, your humour, your people woven in. Every draft you want until every word is right. Vows we craft together. Guidance through the legal steps — the M10 notice forms, the Marriage Schedule — so nothing catches you out. Any traditions you fancy, from a handfasting to a quaich, researched and scripted. And then the day itself: early arrival, a steady hand with nervous wedding parties, and a ceremony delivered like it matters — because it does.

How it compares

A civil ceremony's registrar fee varies by council, and typically climbs for weekends and approved venues — the quoted starting price is rarely the Saturday-at-your-venue price. A humanist ceremony costs the same wherever and whenever you marry: a Tuesday in a community hall, a Saturday on a Loch Lomond shore, a clifftop at sunset. When couples compare like for like, the difference often shrinks to very little — for a ceremony that's written entirely around you, led by someone you chose and got to know.

Where I'd honestly tell you to save instead

Plenty of places — favours nobody keeps, chair covers nobody remembers. But the ceremony is the bit your guests actually came for. It's the twenty minutes people cry in, laugh in, and talk about on the way home. Fifteen years from now you won't remember the table centrepieces. You'll remember every word of your vows.
