The handfasting is the oldest wedding tradition Scotland has — hands bound together in ribbon or tartan as you make your promises, the origin of "tying the knot" itself. As a Humanist Society Scotland celebrant I weave handfastings into fully legal weddings all the time: on beaches, on hillsides, under glass domes and in grand halls. How it works in your ceremony
A handfasting usually sits at the heart of the ceremony, just before or woven through your vows. Your hands are bound — with tartan from your families, ribbons in your colours, or cords tied by people you love — while I tell your guests what the binding means and you make your promises. The knot comes away intact, and couples keep it forever. It takes a few unhurried minutes, it photographs beautifully, and there's not a dry eye in the house. Completely legal, completely yours
Because humanist weddings are legally binding in Scotland, your handfasting isn't a symbolic extra bolted onto a registry-office formality — it's part of your actual, legal marriage ceremony, wherever you choose to hold it. The paperwork is the same as any Scottish wedding, and if you're coming from England for a handfasting with proper Scottish roots, the journey is easier than you'd think. Handfastings are a natural fit for elopements, big days, and everything in between.
Where a handfasting sings
Anywhere, honestly — but there's something about the old tradition in an old landscape: a Hebridean beach, the Quiraing on Skye, Loch Lomond's shore or the mountains at Glencoe.
