Some of the best weddings I've ever led weren't in castles — they were in village halls, dressed by hand, filled with people who'd carried the chairs in themselves. Kinlochard Village Hall sits by the shore of Loch Ard, deep in the Trossachs with Ben Lomond over the water, and on a wedding day it's pure magic: ribbons and fairy lights in the rafters, wildflowers on the windowsills, and a wee stage with red velvet curtains waiting for the band.

Because humanist weddings are legally binding wherever you hold them, a village hall in the Trossachs is as official as any registrar's office — and about a thousand times bonnier. A handfasting feels right at home under those rafters, the paperwork is the same as anywhere in Scotland, and if the day's kind you can even take your vows outside by the loch and use the hall for the party.
